Silver: Key Questions Answered

With a long history as both a store of value and a means of exchange, silver remains a widely traded precious metal among investors. While it is less popular than gold, traders may choose silver for its intrinsic value, to diversify their portfolios or as a potential hedge in periods of high inflation. Exposure can take the form of physical silver coins or bars, or instruments such as exchange-traded funds that follow its price in international markets.

A broad range of influences can drive silver prices. Its safe-haven status means geopolitical instability or concerns about a deep recession can push prices sharply higher, though less markedly than for gold. Lower interest rates also tend to support silver because it pays no yield. As silver is quoted in dollars (XAG/USD), movements in the US Dollar (USD) are another influence: dollar strength tends to restrain prices, while a weaker dollar is likely to lift them. Investment demand, the supply from mines – silver is far more abundant than gold – and recycling rates can affect prices too.

Among metals, silver has one of the highest levels of electrical conductivity, exceeding both copper and gold. This makes it widely used in industry, notably in electronics and solar energy. Rising demand can lift prices, whereas falling demand tends to weigh on them. Developments in the US, Chinese and Indian economies can also drive price fluctuations. Large industrial sectors in the US and, particularly, China use silver in a range of processes, while Indian consumer demand for silver jewellery is another important influence on prices.

Given their similar standing as safe-haven assets, a rise in gold prices is usually accompanied by an increase in silver. The Gold/Silver ratio may offer a way to assess the two metals’ relative valuations by measuring how many ounces of silver equal the value of one ounce of gold. A high reading may be interpreted by some investors as a sign that silver is undervalued or gold overvalued. A low reading, by contrast, might indicate that gold is undervalued compared with silver.
