Swiss Franc regains safe-haven status as bond markets face turmoil

  • After falling more than 2% in less than two weeks, USD/CHF reaches one-month lows near 0.8190.
  • Amid the global bond sell-off, Switzerland’s sound fiscal position has established the CHF as a safe haven.
  • Confirmation of a Double Top comes with a daily close below the 0.8230 area, with the formation sitting just beneath 0.8400.

Switzerland’s sound fiscal position continues to support the Swiss Franc (CHF) against the US Dollar (USD). Dollar weakness is also helping the Franc as traders assess the extent of the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) monetary tightening cycle. On Thursday, the decline in USD/CHF gathered pace, taking the pair below 0.8200 to one-month lows before it recovered some ground.

US debt reached 124% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2026, while France’s rose to 119% and Japan’s exceeded 200% of its GDP. Switzerland’s debt, by comparison, remains at around 15%. That contrast is the principal factor behind USD/CHF’s 2.3% fall over the last two weeks. In recent weeks, investors have flocked to the Swiss Franc as concerns over heavy debt burdens in the world’s leading economies have sent global bonds tumbling.

According to analysts at Commerzbank, “Switzerland’s public finances are much more solid than those of most other industrialised countries.” The analysts also recognise that domestic debate centres on whether the country’s “debt brake can always be adhered to in the face of demographic change and additional military expenditure. But these concerns pale in comparison to those in other European countries."

A moderately positive outlook for the coming quarters emerged from the minutes of the Swiss National Bank’s (SNB) latest monetary policy meeting, published on Thursday. On inflation, policymakers have yet to see signs of second-round effects. They nevertheless caution that high energy prices will leave near-term price risks tilted to the upside. Following the release, the Swiss Franc strengthened.

Technical Analysis: USD/CHF breaks below the Double Top neckline

Chart Analysis USD/CHF

At the time of writing, USD/CHF stands at 0.8213. Trading below the neckline of a Double Top in the 0.8230 area leaves the near-term outlook bearish; the formation commonly signals a change in trend. Negative momentum readings persist on the 4-hour chart. The Relative Strength Index (14) is around 34, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is slightly below zero, suggesting sellers remain in control even with support levels nearby.

For the Double Top just below 0.8400 to be confirmed, the pair needs a daily close beneath the aforementioned 0.8230 area. Such a close would put further pressure on the support confluence formed by the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of the September-October advance, near 0.8195, and the lows of 16 and 22 September around 0.8180. The retracement level is currently keeping sellers at bay. The measured target for the Double Top lies near 0.8070, at the 9 September low.

Conversely, a recovery above 0.8230 would bring Monday’s high near 0.8270 into focus, followed by the 15 October high in the 0.8315 area.
