AMD acquires AI inference chip startup Taalas, completing its data center product matrix!

On Thursday, AMD announced it has reached an agreement to acquire Taalas, an AI inference chip startup headquartered in Toronto, Canada, further strengthening its competitiveness in the inference chip sector and improving its data center AI product matrix. AMD did not disclose the transaction amount.

Data shows that Taalas, founded in 2023, has raised approximately $219 million in total funding. With the rapid adoption of generative AI applications, the industry's focus is gradually shifting from model training to model inference, that is, the computational process in which AI models respond to user requests in real business operations. Unlike general-purpose computing chips like GPUs, Taalas has developed dedicated inference accelerators tailored to hardware for individual AI models, significantly improving inference efficiency and reducing costs. Its technology can quickly convert any AI model into dedicated silicon chips, taking only about two months from receiving a brand-new AI model to completing hardware implementation.

Currently, Taalas's products mainly support Meta's Llama 3.1 small model and are developing new products suitable for larger-scale models. Its chips are manufactured using TSMC's mature process and integrate high-speed SRAM storage to reduce inference latency. Industry insiders believe that

these specialized inference chips are especially suitable for low-latency scenarios, such as AI chatbots, real-time search, autonomous driving, and intelligent assistants that require rapid response.

AMD's CEO previously stated that she has always believed that there is no single chip in the AI chip market that fits all applications. Thanks to their high versatility, GPUs will still hold the majority share of the AI chip market because they can support the continuously evolving new generation of AI models. At the same time, different application scenarios also require more specialized accelerators to jointly build a complete AI computing ecosystem.

Currently, GPU demand remains strong, driving Nvidia's market value past $5 trillion, making it the world's most valuable publicly traded company. This acquisition also reflects AMD's shift from simply selling GPUs to offering comprehensive AI computing system solutions.

In recent years, competition in AI data centers has expanded from single-chip systems to full-rack system competition. This year, AMD began delivering its first rack-level AI system, Helios, to customers such as Meta and Microsoft, competing with Nvidia's DGX system.
