Above $80K: Bitcoin vs Gold as BTC jumps and XAU clears $4,000 amid low, compressed volatility

  • $80,000 is back within Bitcoin’s grasp. Bulls are gaining traction and targeting highs beyond the 50-day EMA.
  • $4,000 remains the key threshold as Gold edges higher above it, accompanied by a rising RSI momentum indicator.
  • Ahead of the Fed decision and major technology companies’ earnings, volatility remains subdued across markets.

$80,000 has been reclaimed by Bitcoin (BTC) on Monday. The cryptocurrency is up a modest 0.34%, while Gold (XAU/USD) has rebounded above the pivotal $4,000 mark with a 0.64% gain. Volatility remains low as both assets advance. Investors are positioning for Wednesday’s Federal Reserve (Fed) decision and earnings from several major technology companies.

91% probability priced for Fed rate hold

A roughly 91% probability of interest rates staying in the 3.75%-4.00% range is currently priced into CME Group’s FedWatch Tool. Just 9% of traders anticipate a rate increase, with Wednesday widely expected to bring no change in monetary policy. This firm expectation of a pause underpins the macroeconomic backdrop as risk assets maintain a cautious but stable tone.

At 50, the Fear & Greed Index now places broader crypto sentiment in Neutral territory. That is well below last week’s Greed reading of 59 and last month’s 74. The cooling sentiment reflects subdued trading activity and persistently low volatility.

In emailed commentary, Yusuf Fakhro, Partner at ARP Digital, said: “What keeps me constructive is what is happening beneath the drift. Participation is extremely low. Volumes are thin, leverage is subdued, and holders are simply refusing to sell at these levels,” adding, “That combination, quiet price action with no one forced to sell, is exactly the pattern that has marked past bottoming phases rather than tops.”

A narrow trading range also characterises Gold, which is maintaining its recovery above $4,000 but has yet to attract strong follow-through buying. The muted volatility in both Gold and Bitcoin signals that markets are waiting for the Fed announcement.
After the Fed meeting, however, volatility could surge. This week’s scheduled Big Tech earnings calls, including Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), and Amazon (AMZN), could influence that move.
Fakhro added: “The honest read is that this is a waiting game, and the wait is nearly over. The calendar from late October is dense: the Fed decision, major tech earnings including the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, and the US midterms all land within a week,”

$80,812 resistance caps Bitcoin: Technical analysis

At $80,454, Bitcoin remains caught between nearby dynamic levels, leaving its short-term outlook neutral to slightly bearish. Immediate resistance comes from the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $80,812, just above the current price. Below, a concentrated support zone comprises the SuperTrend line near $79,664 and the 100- and 200-day EMAs at $77,690 and $76,313, respectively.

A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 43 signals weakness without indicating oversold conditions. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator is still below zero, although its negative profile is narrowing. This points to easing downside momentum, not yet a decisive bullish reversal.

Daily BTC/USDT chart

To clear the current ceiling and restore scope for fresh highs, Bitcoin would need a sustained move above the 50-day EMA at $80,812. On a decline, the first area to monitor is the demand band around the current price, alongside the SuperTrend signal at $79,664.

Should the daily close fall below that zone, the 100-day EMA at $77,690 would become the next support, followed by the more strategically important 200-day EMA at $76,313. Until BTC breaks decisively out of the $79,664-$80,813 range, trading is likely to stay uneven and without a clear direction.

$4,021 Gold recovery faces resistance: XAU technical analysis

At $4,021, Gold retains a bearish near-term outlook. Spot prices remain beneath a concentrated band of moving averages and trend resistance. Above the market, the 50-, 100-, and 200-day EMAs stand at $4,215, $4,278, and $4,284, respectively. With the metal below these medium- and long-term trend benchmarks, the corrective phase appears intact. The SuperTrend at $4,211 adds to the overhead pressure.

Despite earlier efforts to stabilise, bearish momentum appears persistent: the MACD indicator remains negative and its latest reading has turned lower again. At 36, the RSI is also below the 50 threshold, signalling limited buying interest rather than outright oversold conditions.

Daily XRP/USDT chart

Near $4,074, the break level of the descending trendline provides initial resistance and marks the rejection point for the latest rebound attempt. Further up, the SuperTrend at $4,211 and the 50-day EMA at $4,215 form a closely grouped barrier. Gold would need to regain these levels to relieve immediate selling pressure. Beyond them, the 100-day EMA at $4,278 and the 200-day EMA at $4,284 define a wider resistance band that constrains the recovery.

The daily chart offers no clearly defined technical support. Against this bearish structure, rebounds towards the overhead levels could draw fresh selling until Gold records a decisive close above at least the trendline and the short-term EMA.

FAQs on Bitcoin, altcoins and stablecoins

By market capitalisation, Bitcoin ranks as the largest cryptocurrency. It is a virtual currency created to function as money. No single person, group or entity can control this payment method, removing the need for third-party involvement in financial transactions.

The term altcoin covers cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. Some also exclude Ethereum, however, on the basis that forks originate from these two cryptocurrencies. Under that interpretation, Litecoin was the first altcoin: it forked from the Bitcoin protocol and is therefore an “improved” version of it.

Designed to maintain a stable price, stablecoins are cryptocurrencies backed by reserves of the assets they represent. Each stablecoin’s value is pegged to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US Dollar (USD), while an algorithm or demand regulates its supply. Their primary purpose is to give investors a route into and out of cryptocurrency trading and investment. They also provide a way to store value, as cryptocurrencies are generally subject to volatility.

Measured as Bitcoin’s market capitalisation divided by the combined market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin dominance indicates investor interest in Bitcoin. High BTC dominance commonly occurs before and during a bull run, when investors favour relatively stable cryptocurrencies with large market capitalisations, such as Bitcoin. Falling BTC dominance, by contrast, usually signals that investors are shifting capital and/or profits into altcoins in pursuit of higher returns. This typically sparks a surge in altcoin rallies.
