Ethereum Price Forecast: Renewed ETF Outflows Drive ETH Lower

  • $2,200 short-term support holds. Ethereum retreats with the wider crypto market.
  • $100 million left US-listed ETH spot ETFs on Thursday, pointing to institutional repositioning.
  • With the MACD deeply oversold, bears retain broad control of Ethereum.

$2,200 is Ethereum’s near-term psychological demand zone. Ethereum (ETH) drifts towards that level on Friday, extending the smart contract token’s bearish trend. It stands roughly 8% below its monthly peak of $2,442. Dynamic indicators and major moving indicators also continue to impose structural limits on ETH’s upside.

Regulatory fears fuel crypto-wide selling

Heightened concerns over crypto and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the United States (US) account for much of the continuing correction. Those concerns have grown after the Democrats swept Republicans in the midterm elections.

Many fear that Democratic control of Congress could bring tighter crypto regulation, undoing the gains achieved under President Donald Trump’s administration since 2024. Having failed to secure Democratic backing, the CLARITY Act already stalled in the Senate in September.

In a written analysis report, Crypto Finance said: “Elizabeth Warren, one of the industry’s most vocal critics, is expected to take over the Senate Banking Committee when the new Congress convenes in January, although the appointment has not yet been formally confirmed,” adding, “Warren has consistently advocated for tighter oversight of crypto, potentially making the path towards regulatory clarity longer and more restrictive than the industry had hoped.”

$100 million withdrawn from Ethereum ETFs

$100 million flowed out of US-listed Ethereum spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) on Thursday. The withdrawals reinforced risk-off sentiment across crypto. Appetite for digital asset investment products has weakened over recent weeks as institutions adjust positions in response to macro concerns, including elevated inflation, geopolitical tensions and other factors. Since October 26, ETH ETFs have shown a bearish pattern, interrupted only by Wednesday’s exceptional $53 million inflow. Continued withdrawals would maintain bearish pressure on Ethereum, driving further selling over the coming days and weeks.

$2,227 Ethereum price leaves bears in control: Technical analysis

At $2,227, Ethereum remains below the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), which cluster between roughly $2,312 and $2,397. That positioning preserves a bearish near-term bias. The Bollinger Bands’ middle line at $2,334 also caps the price, with nearby support at the lower band of $2,183. Together, these levels suggest continued downside pressure within a broad consolidation.

Demand looks weak, with the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) in negative territory and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 38. Any recovery could therefore struggle to clear the concentrated resistance overhead.

Near $2,210, the area where the rising trendline was broken provides initial support. Below that sits the lower Bollinger band at $2,183; sellers may start taking profits if the price reaches it. Immediate upside resistance comes from the 200-day EMA at $2,312, close to the middle Bollinger band at $2,334. The 100-day EMA at $2,348 and the 50-day EMA at $2,397 add to that bearish barrier. To relieve selling pressure, Ethereum would need a daily close above the latter. That would clear a path towards higher trendline resistance around $2,434 and the upper Bollinger band at $2,486.

Ethereum: Key questions

Smart contract functionality is built into Ethereum, a decentralised, open-source blockchain. By market capitalisation, its native currency, Ether (ETH), ranks as the second-largest cryptocurrency and the leading altcoin. Developers use the Ethereum network to build crypto solutions, including decentralised finance (DeFi), GameFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs), among others.

As a public, decentralised blockchain technology, Ethereum allows developers to build and deploy applications that operate without a central authority. The network supports this through the Solidity programming language and the Ethereum virtual machine, helping developers create and launch applications with smart contract functionality.

Agreements between two or more parties can be automated through publicly verifiable code known as smart contracts. Once predetermined conditions are satisfied, the code automatically carries out the actions programmed into it.

By locking idle crypto assets in a protocol for a specified period, holders can earn a yield while helping secure that protocol. This process is called staking. On 15 September 2022, Ethereum switched its consensus mechanism from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) in an event named “The Merge.” As a central element of Ethereum’s roadmap, The Merge supported its goal of achieving high levels of scalability, decentralisation and security while remaining sustainable. PoW requires expensive hardware. By contrast, PoS lowers the entry barrier for validators by making crypto tokens the foundation of its consensus process.

On Ethereum, transaction fees paid by users are measured in a unit called gas. When the network is congested, gas can become extremely high, prompting validators to give priority to transactions according to the fees attached.
