Silver: Key Questions

Historically a store of value and a medium of exchange, Silver remains a heavily traded precious metal among investors. Gold is more popular, but traders may choose Silver for portfolio diversification, its intrinsic value or its potential to hedge against high inflation. Physical holdings can take the form of coins or bars. Alternatively, investors can gain exposure through instruments such as Exchange Traded Funds that track Silver's price in international markets.

A broad range of forces can influence Silver prices. Its safe-haven status means geopolitical instability or concerns about a severe recession can lift prices, though the effect is generally smaller than for Gold. Lower interest rates also tend to support Silver because it pays no yield. With Silver quoted in US Dollar (USD) terms as XAG/USD, movements in the currency matter: a stronger Dollar tends to restrain prices, while a weaker Dollar is likely to lift them. Investment demand, recycling rates and mine supply can also influence prices. Silver is far more abundant than Gold.

Among metals, Silver has one of the highest levels of electrical conductivity, exceeding both Copper and Gold. This makes it widely used in industry, notably electronics and solar energy. A jump in demand can push prices higher; falling demand tends to depress them. Economic conditions in the US, China and India can also drive price fluctuations. Large industrial sectors in the US and, especially, China use Silver across a range of processes. In India, consumer demand for Silver jewellery is another important influence on prices.

Given their similar safe-haven status, a rise in Gold prices is usually accompanied by gains in Silver. Silver generally tracks Gold's price movements. To assess their relative valuations, investors may use the Gold/Silver ratio, which measures the ounces of Silver required to match the value of one ounce of Gold. A high ratio may be interpreted by some investors as evidence that Silver is undervalued or Gold overvalued. A low ratio, by contrast, might indicate that Gold is undervalued relative to Silver.
