Silver: Key Questions Answered

With a long history as both a store of value and a means of exchange, Silver remains a heavily traded precious metal among investors. It attracts less interest than Gold, but traders may choose it for portfolio diversification, its intrinsic value or its potential to hedge against high inflation. Exposure can take the form of physical Silver coins or bars. Alternatively, investors can use instruments such as exchange-traded funds, which follow Silver’s price in international markets.

A broad set of influences can drive Silver prices. Its safe-haven role means geopolitical turmoil or concerns over a severe recession can push prices higher, though the effect is weaker than for Gold. Lower interest rates also tend to support Silver because it pays no yield. With the metal quoted in US Dollar (USD) terms as XAG/USD, currency movements matter too: Dollar strength tends to restrain Silver prices, while Dollar weakness is likely to lift them. Prices can also respond to investment demand, recycling rates and mine supply, with Silver far more abundant than Gold.

Among metals, Silver has one of the highest levels of electrical conductivity, exceeding both Copper and Gold. This makes it widely used across industry, notably in electronics and solar energy. Stronger demand can lift prices; weaker demand tends to depress them. Economic developments in the US, China and India can also generate price fluctuations. Large industrial sectors in the US, and especially China, use Silver in a range of processes. In India, consumer demand for Silver jewellery is another important influence on pricing.

Sharing a similar safe-haven status, Silver generally tracks Gold and typically advances when Gold prices rise. Relative valuations can be assessed using the Gold/Silver ratio, which measures the ounces of Silver required to match the value of one ounce of Gold. Some investors may interpret a high reading as a sign that Silver is undervalued or Gold is overvalued. A low reading, by contrast, might indicate that Gold is undervalued compared with Silver.
