Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP consolidate as weak sentiment grips crypto markets today

  • $78,000 remains below Bitcoin as it draws support from the 100-day EMA amid subdued market sentiment.
  • $2,300 is Ethereum’s recovery zone, although technical barriers continue to restrict gains.
  • $1.25 holds as XRP’s short-term support, while major moving averages and other technical signals point to the risk of deeper losses.

$78,000 is Bitcoin’s (BTC) initial psychological support on Monday. Trading remains tightly clustered around that level after last week’s steep correction, sparked by investors’ response to the $6.3 billion Binance hack. Ethereum (ETH), meanwhile, is edging higher for a third consecutive day near $2,300. Its modest rebound from support around $2,200 has not displaced traders’ caution, with significant structural barriers likely to constrain ETH’s upside.

For Ripple (XRP), consolidation continues just above the  $1.25 demand zone, while bulls target a near-term rebound towards the next resistance area at $1.30-$1.33.

37 Fear reading signals limited recovery scope

Approximately $6.3 billion was lost in the major security breach at Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange, sharply weakening demand for digital assets. A steep, broad-based crypto sell-off left many investors unsettled. Sentiment also deteriorated markedly: the Fear & Greed Index stood at 37 on Monday, still in Fear territory and only marginally above the previous day’s 34.

That reading looks subdued against last week’s neutral level of 50 and the previous month’s Greed sentiment reading of 37. Market direction will become clearer over the coming days and weeks. Stronger appetite would improve the prospects for a recovery; persistently weak sentiment, by contrast, may leave investors on the sidelines and raise the likelihood of a downtrend.

According to QCP’s ‘Market Colour’ report, “Binance's recovery is on track so far: withdrawals reopened across 15 networks, with a net outflow of $3.64 billion, about 2.1% of assets. It says 95% of stolen funds are covered, though its full proof of reserves has slipped to Tuesday,” with the report adding, “The attacker still holds the BTC and is splitting it into 1,000 and 100 BTC pieces.”

$78,149 Bitcoin holds lower support: Technical analysis

At $78,149, Bitcoin remains above its 100-day and 200-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), around $77,825 and $76,484 respectively. This leaves the broader uptrend structure intact despite pressure from the latest pullback. The near-term outlook is nevertheless bearish: price remains below the 50-day EMA near $80,295 and SuperTrend resistance around $83,470.

Weak momentum adds to the headwinds. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 39, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains negative. Recoveries could therefore struggle while the overhead barriers continue to limit gains.

Daily chart: BTC/USDT

The 50-day EMA near $80,295 provides the first resistance, followed by the SuperTrend line around $83,470. Together, they reinforce a wider supply zone. Immediate downside support lies at the 100-day EMA around $77,825, then the 200-day EMA near $76,484. A break below the latter would leave the pair exposed to a deeper correction within the daily range.

$2,291 Ethereum faces trend barriers: ETH technical analysis

At $2,291, Ethereum retains a bearish near-term bias, trading beneath the 200-day EMA at $2,317 and the 100-day EMA at $2,353. Higher up, the 50-day EMA near $2,417 and the SuperTrend line at $2,490 add further layers to the overhead supply zone. Any rally is therefore likely to encounter selling pressure.

Although the RSI has climbed out of oversold territory towards 37, it remains bearish. The MACD is also still negative, even as losses narrow. These signals suggest that downward momentum is fading rather than reversing.

Daily chart: ETH/USDT

The first upside barrier is the 200-day EMA around $2,317. Beyond it lie the broken rising trendline area near $2,335 and the 100-day EMA at $2,353. Bulls would then need to overcome the 50-day EMA at $2,417 before testing SuperTrend resistance around $2,490. This dataset shows no nearby structural support below the current price. ETH consequently remains exposed to fresh declines while it stays beneath the cluster of moving averages and trend resistance.

$1.25 XRP stays rangebound: Technical analysis

Around $1.25, XRP continues to trade below its key moving averages and the recently reclaimed downtrend line, maintaining a bearish bias. The 100-day, 50-day and 200-day EMAs stand above price at $1.33, $1.34 and $1.37, respectively. These barriers suggest that recovery attempts remain constrained as the pair struggles to reverse its recent decline.

With the RSI near 37 and the MACD indicator below zero, momentum remains subdued. The absence of sustained buying interest leaves the market at risk of further losses.

Daily chart: XRP/USDT

Near $1.30, the former downtrend line breakout level marks initial resistance. The next hurdle is the 100-day EMA at $1.33. Beyond these levels, the 50-day EMA at $1.34 and the 200-day EMA at $1.37 form a wider supply zone, ahead of the SuperTrend barrier at $1.40.

The current daily-chart indicators offer no clear nearby support. Traders may therefore use intraday price movements and earlier swing lows to identify potential floors. As long as XRP remains below the clustered EMAs, however, any rebound is likely to be viewed as corrective.

Bitcoin, altcoins and stablecoins: Key questions

By market capitalisation, Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency. It is a virtual currency created to function as money. No single person, group or entity can control this payment method, removing the need for third parties to participate in financial transactions.

The term altcoin covers cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. Some also exclude Ethereum, however, because forks originate from these two cryptocurrencies. Under that interpretation, Litecoin is the first altcoin: it was forked from the Bitcoin protocol and is therefore an “improved” version of it.

Designed to maintain a stable price, stablecoins are cryptocurrencies backed by reserves of the assets they represent. Each stablecoin’s value is pegged to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US Dollar (USD), while an algorithm or demand regulates its supply. Their primary purpose is to give investors a route into and out of cryptocurrency trading and investment. They also offer a way to store value, as cryptocurrencies generally experience price volatility.

Calculated by dividing Bitcoin’s market capitalisation by the combined market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin dominance indicates the level of investor interest in Bitcoin. BTC dominance is typically high ahead of and during a bull run, when investors favour relatively stable cryptocurrencies with large market capitalisations, such as Bitcoin. When BTC dominance falls, it usually signals that investors are shifting capital and/or profits into altcoins in pursuit of higher returns. This often sparks a surge in altcoin rallies.
