【TMGM Financial Recap】Gold Hits a Nearly Seven-Week High as Diminishing Rate Hike Expectations and Potential Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz Boost Outlook
The global gold market has sent a powerful signal, with spot gold soaring more than 4% in a single day to reach its highest level in nearly seven weeks. The rally was driven by a combination of lower U.S. Treasury yields, a weaker U.S. dollar, and growing optimism over Iran nuclear negotiations and the possible resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
After retreating around 24% from its record high of US$5,595 in January and falling roughly 19% since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, gold is once again attracting investor interest. As expectations for further interest rate hikes have eased significantly since last week, investors who positioned early are returning to the precious metals market. At the same time, the sharp decline in the U.S. dollar has provided direct support, while signs of easing tensions surrounding Iran have added further momentum.

The primary driver behind the latest surge in gold prices has been the improvement in interest rate expectations and the U.S. dollar environment. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury hovered near a one-week low, while the two-year Treasury yield fell to its lowest level since July 20. Federal funds futures now indicate that the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September has declined from nearly 70% earlier this week to just below 60%, reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index continued to weaken after touching a six-week low on Monday. A softer dollar makes gold more affordable for overseas buyers, further boosting demand. Oil prices also retreated to around US$80 per barrel, easing concerns over runaway energy inflation and reducing demand for the U.S. dollar as a safe-haven asset.
A deeper catalyst has come from subtle shifts in geopolitical developments. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his administration had held "very good" discussions with Iran throughout the day and expressed confidence that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen soon. Iran also delivered encouraging signals, with its Deputy Foreign Minister stating that an agreement with Oman on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is close to being finalized.
Under the proposed arrangement, the traditional northbound and southbound shipping lanes would be replaced by temporary new routes, allowing portions of commercial vessel traffic to pass through Iranian territorial waters. The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place for two to four months. Although the situation has not been fully resolved, these developments have been enough to ease months of market anxiety over geopolitical risks and energy-driven inflation.
Market Insight:
Overall, gold's sharp rally has been fueled by multiple supportive factors. Falling Treasury yields and a weaker U.S. dollar have reduced the opportunity cost of holding gold, while progress in negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz has eased concerns over energy inflation and geopolitical tensions. In addition, the technical breakout has attracted fresh short-term buying interest.
Investors should closely monitor Friday's U.S. employment data, further developments in U.S.-Iran negotiations, and upcoming comments from Federal Reserve officials, all of which could play a key role in determining gold's next move.
