USD/CHF Price Forecast: Can US Dollar bulls reach the resistance area at 0.8270?

  • Friday's advance remains intact as USD/CHF consolidates near 0.8250 on Monday.
  • Caution prevails in markets as investors await policy decisions from the Fed and other leading central banks.
  • Bearish pressure has subsided following the sharp recovery from 0.8190.

A cautious mood is keeping markets without a clear direction on Monday, as investors avoid sizeable USD positions before the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision later in the week. Against this backdrop, the US Dollar (USD) retains Friday’s advance against the Swiss Franc (CHF). USD/CHF is trading comfortably around 0.7250, within reach of the two-week high of 0.7270.

According to ING analyst Christ Turner, “interest rate spreads have moved a little against the Dollar as the recent US tech wobble has pared back Federal Reserve tightening expectations.” Yet Turner also notes that “energy prices remain at their highs,” and that “the arrival of a third US aircraft carrier group in the Gulf makes further escalation in the Middle East more likely than not,” factors which ING believes should continue to support the Dollar despite the repricing in interest rate markets.

Technical Analysis: Has the recovery from 0.8190 lows reduced bearish pressure?

Chart Analysis USD/CHF

A modest bullish bias persists in USD/CHF at 0.8250 following Friday’s sharp bounce from the 0.8190 region. Momentum indicators remain supportive: the Relative Strength Index (14) sits slightly above its midpoint, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) shows a small positive reading.

The first likely challenge for buyers is the high recorded on 19 and 20 October, near 0.8270. Beyond that lie the lows of 13 and 14 October around 0.8315, followed by the year-to-date peak near 0.8400, reached in mid-October.

During Monday's Asian session, support around 0.8230 has checked attempts to push lower, blocking a move towards Friday’s previously mentioned low of 0.8191. A bearish break below that level would shift attention to the 1 September peak at 0.8156.
