What is XAUUSD?

XAUUSD is the ticker symbol for spot gold priced in US dollars. XAU is the ISO 4217 currency code for one troy ounce of gold, and USD is the US dollar. The pair represents the live price of gold quoted against the dollar on the foreign exchange market.

What affects the price of XAUUSD?

XAUUSD prices are driven by 7 main factors: supply and demand, inflation expectations, interest rates and real yields, US dollar strength, central bank activity, economic uncertainty, and market sentiment. US dollar strength and interest rate policy are the most direct drivers of the pair: a stronger dollar weighs on XAUUSD, while lower real yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold and support the price. The remaining factors, from central bank purchasing to geopolitical risk, influence the gold side of the equation by shifting physical and speculative demand.

How is the XAUUSD price calculated?

The XAUUSD price is calculated by quoting the value of one troy ounce of gold (XAU) in US dollars (USD). The pair moves when either side of the equation changes: a rising gold valuation pushes the price up, while a strengthening US dollar pushes it down. Both forces act simultaneously, which is why XAUUSD reflects the relative strength between gold and the dollar at any given moment.

How does XAUUSD trading work?

XAUUSD trading works by opening a leveraged position on the spot price of one troy ounce of gold against the US dollar, without owning physical bullion. You profit by correctly predicting whether that price will rise or fall.

  • Opening a buy (long) position means purchasing XAU by selling USD, profiting if gold strengthens against the dollar.
  • Opening a sell (short) position means selling XAU by buying USD, profiting if gold weakens.

You can open and close positions within the same day to capitalise on intraday gold price movements.

What are the benefits of trading XAUUSD?

XAUUSD offers 8 benefits to traders: high liquidity, portfolio diversification, inflation protection, safe-haven demand, hedging capability, two-directional profit potential, short-term trading opportunities, and interest rate sensitivity.

Gold is one of the most actively traded commodities globally, which supports tight spreads and efficient order execution on the XAUUSD pair. Gold often moves independently from equities and currencies, giving you a diversification tool and a hedge against portfolio concentration risk. Because XAUUSD is traded through leveraged positions, you can profit from both rising and falling gold prices by going long or short. Gold reacts to macroeconomic data releases, central bank decisions, interest rate shifts, and geopolitical headlines, creating frequent short-term trading setups with clear directional signals.

What are the risks of trading XAUUSD?

Trading XAUUSD carries 5 main risks: unpredictable price swings, leverage amplification, gap risk, liquidity shifts, and overexposure.

Gold prices can move sharply in response to news events, US dollar strength, central bank announcements, and session-driven volatility, and a single unexpected move can result in the loss of all or a portion of your invested capital. Leverage amplifies these swings: a small adverse move in the gold price can consume your margin quickly, increasing the risk of account blowout. XAUUSD can also gap between sessions or experience wider spreads during low-liquidity periods, pushing execution beyond your stop-loss level. A common risk management rule is to risk no more than 1% of your total trading capital on a single trade.

What is the best time to trade XAUUSD?

The best time to trade XAUUSD is during the London/New York overlap, from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC (08:00 to 12:00 EST). This four-hour window produces the highest liquidity of the gold trading day because London, the centre of OTC spot gold trading, and New York, home to COMEX futures, are active simultaneously. Spreads on XAUUSD are at their tightest, and major US economic releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC) fall at the start of this window.

The London session includes two daily benchmark fixes (AM at 10:30 UTC, PM at 15:00 UTC) that concentrate institutional volume. After London closes at 17:00 UTC, New York liquidity drops to COMEX futures activity alone and spreads widen. The Asian session carries the lowest liquidity overall, though the Shanghai Gold Exchange open at 01:30 UTC adds a brief window of increased activity. Higher liquidity produces tighter spreads, faster execution, and lower slippage risk on every XAUUSD trade.

How much money do I need to trade XAUUSD?

The minimum deposit to start trading XAUUSD on TMGM is $100. The amount you need beyond that depends on your position size, leverage ratio, and margin requirement.

XAUUSD margin is calculated as the position value divided by the leverage ratio. For example, if gold is trading at $4,000 per ounce and you open a 0.01 lot position (1 ounce) with 1:100 leverage, the required margin is $40. A larger position or lower leverage ratio increases the margin needed to open and hold the trade.

Your trading capital should also account for the spread cost on entry and enough free margin to absorb price fluctuations without triggering a margin call. Risking no more than 1% of your account balance per trade gives you room to manage multiple positions and withstand short-term moves against your direction.
